 Marae Stay in Buce Bay

Early in the Certificate in Ecotourism programme, students travel to a stunning location in Bruce Bay in Southwestland where there is a wonderful new Marae. The students learn about Marae tikanga (protocol or life rules) and all contribute to life on the Marae including cooking, cleaning, sharing their life and family stories, Powhiri and Poroporoaki.

Skits are part of the learning while on the Marae and they produce much laughter © geoff button

Most students really enjoy this experience for many reasons, often just that they haven't been on a Marae before and they were always apprehensive about it and the reality is that it is a very welcoming place where strong bonds between students and other students, tutors and Tangata Whenua of the area are formed.

Students learn Waiata (songs) process of Powhiri and Poroporoaki (welcome and farewell) some Te Reo (Maori language) and Pepeha (learn their lineage or Whakapapa) which are all part of the Te Ao Maori learning component of the Certificate in Ecotourism.
