Student work placements

Students on the Certificate in Ecotourism spend 24 weeks at the Tai Poutini Polytechnic campus in Greymouth where they will complete class studies, field trips and assessments.

After this time the students will go out and complete a 10 week work placement in a relevant business. This is flexible because the world doesn't always fit perfectly to our course content so we have students working in the following roles

  • Kayak guides
  • Department of Conservation visitor center
  • Department of Conservation conservation worker
  • Interpretation guide at Botanical gardens
  • Driver / guide on multi day tours
  • Nature guide at a remote wilderness lodge

Work Opportunities

The students need to complete a full time 10 weeks in an ecotourism related role. During this time they must also complete a written assignment containing some reflection on their time in the workplace. There is also a blog site where students will communicate with tutors and other students about their experiences on the course and in the workplace.

Students will most often gain full time employment from their work placement and employers have commented on the relevancy of the content the students are learning on the Ecotourism Certificate programme.
